Christmassy festivities and fun in a mountainous winter wonderland
Wednesday 26 June - Travelling to the Chateau
Our tour kicks off today with an iconic voyage on the Northern Explorer. Boarding in Wellington or Palmerston North, we experience the joys of train travel as it journeys through heartland North Island to National Park.Crossing rolling green countryside, numerous spectacular viaducts, following the distinctive papa cliffs of the Rangitikei River, passing through the volcanic landscapes of Tongariro National Park, and negotiating the tight curves of the historic and engineering marvel the Raurimu Spiral, we finally rumble our way across the plateau to National Park where we disembark and join our tour coach to travel the short distance to the Chateau. (Lunch is at your own cost onboard the train today.)
Chateau Tongariro is one of the most majestic hotels in New Zealand - surrounded by elegance and grandeur and nestled in NZ’s first National Park, gifted to the people of NZ by chief Te Heu Heu of the Tuwharetoa tribe in 1887. The remainder of the afternoon is at our leisure: take a walk, visit the excellent Visitor Centre just up the road, have a game of pool, or enjoy coffee in the library. Tonight we enjoy relaxing dining in the hotel.
Thursday 27 June - Horopito and Tokaanu Hot Pools
This morning we visit an iconic attraction in the National Park region, Horopito Motors.Established in the 1940s by Bill Cole, whose philosophy was that if a car for dismantling came into the yard, whatever parts were not sold they would stay there. Nothing was scrapped, which explains the vast collection of parts that are here today. This yard is unique in Australasia and in 1981 the noted New Zealand film "Smash Palace" was filmed here.
Before we return to the Chateau for lunch, we stop to view the spectacular Makatote Viaduct which spans the Makatote River, a breath-taking 79 metres (259 feet) above the river bed. We also stop to look at the historic “last spike” – wherein 1909, then Prime Minister Sir Joseph Ward ceremonially opened the North Island main trunk railway line by driving home a final polished silver spike.
Lunch today at the Chateau is a high tea, a selection of delicious finger sandwiches, scones and sweet treats, accompanied by your choice of espresso coffee or a range of gourmet teas, served in the elegant and timeless Ruapehu Lounge.
This afternoon we venture out again to visit Tokaanu hot pools, for those who want to enjoy a soak at this thermal bathing area which for generations has been recognised as having the 'wai ora’ (healing waters).
Returning to the Chateau, we have time to relax before we dine in again tonight, enjoying a special Mid Winters spread with a Christmassy theme.
Friday 28 June - Travelling Home
Homeward bound today we stop at Ohakune for morning tea (at our own cost – perhaps an opportunity to sample a famous Ohakune chocolate eclair).Lunch today is at the Rangatira Golf Club, overlooking this three-tiered course with an impressive backdrop of the distinctive papa cliffs of the Rangitikei River. After lunch, we resume our journey to Palmerston North where we bid our fellow travellers farewell and meet connecting transfers to return us to our home locations.
